EXCERPT: Chapter 1

The rich orange glow of the rising sun washed over Paul as he gazed outside his beachfront bungalow. Another calm morning in paradise, he thought, taking it all in. The Caribbean Island of St. Anne, with its rich French heritage and vibrant culture, had been the home of retired detective Paul Phillips for the past few years.

Sunrise. It's a ritual Paul looked forward to every morning. As he stood at his window, he felt his eyes being drawn to the horizon like a magnet. The sky was ablaze with hues of pink and orange, a gentle reminder of the beauty that still existed in this world. He had lived on St. Anne for what felt like an eternity, but the sunrise still took his breath away.

However, like every paradise with a magnificent sunrise, came a downside. The heat.

The heat of St. Anne was a double-edged sword. On the one hand, Paul loved the warm sunshine and the vibrant atmosphere it brought to the island. The heat infused the air with a sense of energy and vitality, and it was common to see people smiling and laughing as they went about their daily lives.

As a retiree, Paul was not as resilient in the heat as he used to be. The hot temperatures and high humidity could be overwhelming at times, which left him feeling lethargic and drained. He would sometimes get headaches and feel dizzy if he were out in the sun for too long without a hat or adequate hydration. His skin was also more sensitive to the sun, and he must be careful not to get too much exposure, or he’ll end up with a nasty burn. Getting older sucked.
